Housing Support

Selection of an appropriate living situation for your loved one, and support with adjustment to nursing home or assisted living placement is an important part of our practice.
Few folks have a thorough understanding of the many housing and care options out there for individuals who are no longer able to live at home without help.  While retirement communities and assisted living residences are marketed as though they can answer every need, it is not that simple.  There are nuances and differences among communities, depending not only on their definition (nursing, assisted, independent) but on the management’s philosophy, business model, the staff development quality, and the mix of residents who live there.  Cost, amenities that may not be wanted or needed, and location can be  important keys.  Adult children may think one residence is perfect, while older parents may think something completely different.
There are important principles to keep in mind when a move does happen that will make the difference between a parent adjusting gracefully and comfortably, or feeling like a miserable “fish out of water.”  A care manager can facilitate an optimal adjustment and ease some of the inevitable stress.
